Rare and beautiful handmade and intricately hand painted antique (XIX – early XX century) Chinese Yuan Dynasty later copy of globular vase with short wide cylindrical neck and base and multiple embossed elements and medallions. The vase is painted underglaze with the intense dark blue background colour. The background colour does not cover the base of the vase, coming freely towards it in the irregular drips and flows. All design elements are embossed and painted in freehand in bright blending strokes of milk white, orange, turquoise green and brown colours. Colours are applied freely and do not contain within their designated spaces flowing out and down. The vase has a horizontal swell band in the upper part to which peony flowers are attached from the top and the bottom in an alternating order. The body is decorated with four large medallions contained within the round swells, featuring embossed and freehand painted phoenix birds. Phoenix birds (Chinese – Fènghuáng) – in ancient Chinese a mythological birds that had originated in the Sun and reigned over all other birds. Chinese Phoenix was believed to be made up of the beak of a rooster, the face of a swallow, the forehead of a fowl, the neck of a snake, the breast of a goose, the back of a tortoise, the hindquarters of a stag and the tail of a fish. The bird was believed to only appear in areas or places that are blessed with utmost peace and prosperity or happiness. During the Yuan dynasty the “King of Birds” came to symbolise the empress when paired with a dragon representing the emperor. In the bottom placed between the phoenix medallions are four beautiful embossed and freehand painted lotus flowers on leaf covered stems shaped into beautiful rosettes. The vase comes in a perfect original condition, with no chips, scales and minimum wear. The glaze is covered in hairline cracks throughout the surface. 8 in / 25 cm. 10,4 in / 26 cm.
