The interior is carved in the centre with both a dragon and a floral design below a band of trellis diaper in the well and undulating wave scroll on the everted rim. They represent the greatest philosophers of Confucianism, Yan Hui, Zeng Shen, Zisi, and Mencius. The carvings have stunning craftsmanship and design. Each piece has a very unique face, full of character – a mark of a master carver. In addition, they all have excellent details, yet other details are left simple – another mark of the modesty in a Chinese master carver. The most important parts (the faces of the men and their mythological animals) have the most lively and interesting expressions. A rare find, rare subject matter, and a rare material used for the carving set. The set is well preserved with very little wear and tear, as any imperfection is not easy to readily locate.
