Very Rare Antique Foochow Fuzhou Lacquer Tea Caddy Vase + LID No Damage
A rare antique lacquer ware Chinese tea caddy with fitted lid made in Foochow. Hand painted on one side, in gold yellow and black, there is a fisherman standing in a boat. The fisherman is holding a rod and there are birds swimming in the water. The neck of the caddy is also decorated with a pattern in the same colours. The lid is slightly domed and fits tightly in the neck of the caddy. The base is stamped in gold with Chinese characters on a globe with the map of China in the middle. It measures approximately 17.5cm high x 4.9cm rim diameter x 5.9cm base diameter. The circumference is approximately 8.9cm. It weighs approximately 105g. There are no chips, cracks or restoration to the caddy or lid. There is some age related discolouration and rubbing. Please look at the photographs provided to assess the condition of the item. The vase with richly gilded ground, decorated in coloured enamels with pink and green dragons, flowers and stylised foliage and with elephant styled handles with rings. The base with mock Chinese marks in iron red. There are three cracks, professionally restored, they are visible on the green background of the neck of the vase; please see photos. From the outside they are almost invisible. Both rings in handles are intact which is very rare for a vase this age. Some light wear to gilt and paint, commensurate with this vase being older than 200 years. Please review all photos carefully. Fine example of Miles Mason’s early production dating circa 1800 to 1816 – the period when mock Chinese marks were used on rare vases. A similarly shaped vase with a different pattern is depicted on plate 288, page 212 of Geoffrey A. Godden “Mason’s china and the Ironstone Wares”. Golden, a specialist on British porcelain describes it as: “A rare Mason’s Ironstone vase after an Oriental original”. This vase can be seen on display at Victoria and Albert Museum. 17 cm in height 3,8 cm in diameter across the opening 5.5 cm in diameter at the base 6.5 cm in diameter at the widest section.
