Very Rare Antique Kangxi Period Imari Coffee Pot. Very rare, authentic Kangxi period coffee circa 1700. Cylindrical, tapered design, beautifully decorated in iron red, green and blue enamels with gilt highlights. Likely made for the European export market and based on a Dutch metal original design. This is a large item at 22cm high, 9.5cm rim diameter, 15cm base diameter and weighs over 1.5kg. It is likely the pot would have originally had silver or gold mountings, as was common with export wares, but sadly these are missing. The body of the pot is in very good condition with one, very small rim chip. There is also a hairline crack where the upper part of the handle joins the body (so I do not recommend lifting it by the handle). There would originally have been three ceramic feet but these have all been removed. Some pots sat in a silver/gold decorative base so it is possible the ceramic feet were removed to accommodate such a base 300 years ago. There would have been a (most likely) silver tap to the lower front of the pot to allow for pouring without lifting the pot but this is sadly missing (the hole is currently filled with a small cork stopper). The lid is also absent and would have been attached to the handle, again with silver or gold fittings. Because of the missing items/damage I think its very likely that the valuable silver/gold fittings were removed for sale, leaving the lid to go missing so that only the body of the pot now remains. Here, I’ve obviously priced this to reflect the missing parts. I’ve not seen a similar piece outside a museum so this is a very rare opportunity to acquire one privately. Items of a very similar design were made during the corresponding Edo period in Japan and exported to Europe but I’m over 90% certain this is a Chinese export version. Hardwood stand not included.
