The surface of each vase is finely carved with two reserves of flowering branches and rockwork on a geometric patterned ground This is a wonderful example of cinnabar from China is an old not new piece of carved Cinnabar lacquer. The lacquer was applied coat by coat to the core in up to 200 coats, or until a thickness that could be carved was achieved. This requires an enormous amount of time and labour, as each layer must dry and be polished before the next layer is applied. Since lacquer hardens slowly, only one layer could be applied per day. When all the layers are applied, the craftsman can carve an elaborate design into the surface. This piece is on copper/ brass body and the lining and base are enameled in azure blue enamel.
