Nanking Cargo c1750 RARE Blue and Enamel Spittoon Chinese Shipwreck Delicately hand painted with tree peony issuing from rockwork. This design is painted on a globular body and bears a band of petals around its conical neck. The interior rim depicts a trellis band border. Would have once been decorated with enamel detailing. During its manufacture, the cobalt blue was applied beneath the glaze. The enamel detailing was applied on top on the glaze which gave it minimal protection beneath the sea. Over the hundreds of years spent submerged, the enamel has slowly disappeared, remaining in a somewhat ghost form when tilted in the light. This spittoon is one of the more rarer pieces from the Nanking shipwreck, only 68 were auctioned at Christies. Size: Height: 8.2cm Diameter: 12.4cm Condition: Restoration at the rim 5.4cm x 0.6cm. I attended the sales and will provide a scan of the relevant pages from my catalogue. The Nanking cargo is the most famous of the shipwreck cargoes. It attracted world wide media attention when it was auctioned by Christies Amsterdam in April 1986. The VerenigdeOostIndische Compagnie V. She set sail from Canton on December 18th 1751 bound for Amsterdam. The valuable cargo consisted of over 160,000 pieces of porcelain, tea, raw silk, textiles and one hundred and forty five gold ingots. On January 3rd 1752, after 16 days sailing the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sank in the South China Sea. I spent four days viewing the porcelain in order to select the nicer pieces. RARE & IMPORTANT ANTIQUE CHINESE BRONZE MYSTIC MOUNTAIN ZUN. Exquisite, antique Chinese cast bronze zun form vase of exceptionally fine museum quality. Exceedingly rare and important inscription “Precious Treasure Mountain” which refers to the mystical and legendary Mount Penglai. According to myths dating back as far as the 4th century BC, Penglai Shan was an island mountain in the Eastern Sea where the immortals dwelled in light and harmony. All living creatures on the magical island were said to be white, while the palace was of pure gold. Historically, Qin Shi Huang (the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty 259-210 BC), in search of the herbal elixir of immortal life, sent several actual expeditions to find the island where the mountain is located. This magnificent bronze vessel exhibits archaic zun form with a wide mouth and tapered waist. The exterior is decorated with raised and boldly cast seal script characters against the smooth patinated ground. The patina is absolutely sublime, with traces of green, red, and amber, long ago smoothed away by either the individual who dug it up or one of the fortunate owners over the centuries. Whoever restored this piece did the perfect job of revealing the underlying bronze while retaining just the right amount of patina. The resulting effect is smooth and most tactilely pleasing. The interior still bears thick encrustations and hardened soil at the bottom. The rim exhibits a small chip, which occurred centuries ago, prior to patination, and since worn quite smooth with traces of green patina on the surface. We have conservatively dated this piece to the Song to Ming Dynasty. With the very early reference to Penglai Shan, it is an important historic treasure. Over the centuries, this superb bronze vessel may have graced temples, imperial households, or scholar’s studios. As a zun, this piece may have been utilized to serve herbal elixirs or fermented beverages in Taoist rituals. It would have been especially appreciated during the Song and Ming Dynasties when archaeological treasures were unearthed in China and were collected by the aristocracy. If only it could tell of all that it has quietly witnessed. Displays most elegantly, drawing attention from all the way across the room. Of significant size, measuring approximately 9.75″ high and 6.75″ wide at the rim. A tasteful and important historic masterpiece, rarely seen on the open market, representing the finest of the Chinese scholar’s aesthetic. Would make an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world-class Chinese antiques or as museum acquisition. SEE 12 PHOTOS ABOVE LEFT FOR ALL OF THE MAGNIFICENT DETAIL. Up for consideration is a very difficult to find wooden carved Antique Chinese Export Duck. It stands about 8.5 inches in height and quite unusual. It has great coloration and form. Often one finds this form of duck in porcelain or pottery. It has orginal old paint with faded gold feather painted detail. It probably dates from the 20’s or 30’s or slightly earlier. Please see photos as part of the description. If you have any questions concerns or something to share please message thanks. Please check out my other listings and if you feel like follow along.
